George Joseph Smith

I truly thought that Dorothy L. Sayers had invented George Joseph Smith as "a case Lord Peter can refer to sometimes in passing."

Little did I know.

The entire transcription of his trial is online. It's heartbreaking and frightening and awful. He preyed on women who were, by the reckoning of their time, considered pathetic, past the age for marriage, pitiable, and he used his charm and their trust in him to get their money and eventually to kill them.
