On Good Friday, as I was driving up Wisconsin, I was startled to see Fr. J and Matushka C in the car behind me. I waved. They could not see who I was until they got in front of me. They waved. Then I drove up beside them. Fr. J pretended not to see me (put his hands beside his face) while I called out, "Hey, strangers, where are you heading?" It was hilarious. I love Fr. J. I didn't realize until we got to church and I asked my friend K about it that he is also my friend A's father.

Pascha was fun, exciting, exhausting, and overwhelming. I like our new Metropolitan - his energy is very calming - and find him a little unconventional. I'm not sure how I feel about that! My last name may be French-Canadian, and my mother Italian, but I'm cradle Orthodox and found a few things reminiscent of Catholic and Protestant services. That said, I'm sure everything had some basis in tradition, and I know all of it was consistent with Tradition, so... A lot of it was interesting in good ways. Unlike Metropolitan Herman, for example, Metropolitan Jonah was careful to come out into the church and cense us a few times. He stayed around and talked to laypeople. This is a hugely good thing. I'm of the opinion that our bishops should be available to us, and not just to our priests. They are the leaders of our communities, and believe me, the community is just as much the old ladies who stay downstairs and do the cooking as the young matushkas who attend every service or the diaconate.

The service was wonderful, and even more packed than usual. It was tiring, but at least my back didn't hurt, which is my body's usual response. That was a good thing. My cleaning ended on a much more relaxed note than usual on Saturday. After Liturgy, we had "breakfast" in the parish hall. It was lovely - good food, great people. I love my community.

We got to bed at about 5 a.m. I woke for no apparent reason just before 7 and spent half an hour rejoicing in my computer. Then I went back to bed for an hour and got up again to open Easter baskets, since we had been visited by an anthropomorphic bunny in the meantime. Went back to bed until about 10. Then we got up and prepared, in a leisurely way, for guests. We had guests from 3 to about 10:30 p.m. I slept like a rock for eight hours. I spent all day today exhausted to the point of confusion. Slept for four more hours when I went home and am feeling somewhat better though still exhausted.

It was lovely to see S and (for the first time at our place) A and their daughters. I hadn't met the baby before. She was adorable. The older child is a complete sweetie, though a little dependent for her age. It was awesome to have [livejournal.com profile] scooterbird, [livejournal.com profile] efbq, and the monkeys, [livejournal.com profile] dindin, and [livejournal.com profile] vvalkyrie around. Everyone enjoyed themselves and little J even ate lamb, though they usually can't get her to eat meat. In fact, she ate a full plate of dinner, to her parents' great pleasure. Everyone loved the cheese pascha. It was happiness.
